If you’re in IT, Ethernet is “it” in most cases. If you’re in OT, Ethernet isn’t always the main “road” for data to travel. A lot of working ICS installations still rely on proprietary networks or serial. Serial is great but it is hard to scale and certainly limits your possibilities. Ethernet is flexible, ubiquitous, and fast. In the OT world, it can be a bit pricey.
I’m not here to convince you to go from serial to Ethernet. But what I am going to tell you is that, eventually, you may not have a choice at your next refresh.
